It’s easy for me to have bright colors on the brain this summer, between the constant stream of effusively ripe produce at the farmers’ market and eye-poppingly bright fashion on the streets. This may be one of the sillier questions we’ve posted, but the world wants to know: What color of foods do you think, on the whole, is your favorite? For example…
“Orange” includes the bold universe of oranges (duh), kumquats, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc.
“Blue” would encapsulate blueberries, bluefish, blue crabs, Wild Berry Pop-Tarts, and so on.
There is no set color palette, so if you wanna do hot pink, that’s cool. If you’re all about “glistening golden brown with crystal flecks not unlike turbinado sugar,” I can do that for you. And is there anyone out there that would go for silvered almonds and French dragées?
We asked around America’s Test Kitchen for their favorite colors to eat. Here are a sampling:
Red wine, red sauce, red meat, red beans and rice, red velvet cake, Red Lobster. One of these things is not like the others, but still, you get the point.
Emerald green all the way: avocado (I’m stretching here, but whatever, they’re delicious), garlic chives, cilantro, jalapeños, green onions, dinosaur kale.
White! All the things I love to eat are rice, pasta, ramen, tofu, dumplings…
Orange. Definitely orange. Orange is fall. And fall means squash. And squash means Thanksgiving. And Thanksgiving means a nap.
There is nothing more brilliant than the shade of green that perfectly blanched peeled asparagus gets. It is almost neon and it is truly a thing of beauty.
Red, no contest. All the best foods are red: strawberries, tuna, steak, red velvet cake. You could even argue that bacon, the universally recognized greatest food of all time, is red.
And now for the Silly Question of the Day…
What’s your favorite color to eat, and why?
Leave your silly answer in the comments!
