They got it all wrong. There are a lot of things better than sliced bread. And, it’s not the sliced bread past tense that’s great. It is the slicing of bread, freshly baked. It’s the nurturing smell that drifts lazily into the other room. It is the sheer delight of pulling a pan out of the oven, the dough inside magically risen, and then the somewhat incredulous thought: I did this. And now I get to slice it myself, get to break through the crust into the spongy, delicate interior, and proceed to use my homemade bread for any sandwich my hungry little heart desires. And isn’t that just the best thing since… well.
Over at Tracey’s Culinary Adventures, Tracey understands the joys of that moment right before the loaf is sliced. She braved the heat of the oven in summertime for the sake of homemade bread, and looking at her Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread, I’d say it was worth it.
