Just for a second, let’s pretend it’s not hot. Let’s imagine that sweat doesn’t start prickling the moment the front door opens, that fans aren’t running in every room, that maybe, just maybe, the thought of a sweater is appealing. Just for a second. Just long enough to think about what you might want to eat if it weren’t quite so balmy. It would probably be cheesy. It would probably be saucy. Let’s imagine holding a deep baking dish, heavy and deep-smelling, as we relish in the heat emanating from the the open oven door. And in this dish, hearty and bubbling, is tonight’s dinner: baked ziti. It is gooey and creamy, just like we knew it would be. A childhood staple that always warms the heart, even if our body is already warm enough.
That’s what Brooke from The Flour Sack must have imagined when she presented this Baked Ziti in a cast iron baking dish to her hungrily happy family members. Because sometimes, in summertime too, all we need is a little comfort food.
