Coffee cake is for the mingling hour after church. A fruit cake? Taboo. A pandowdy just sounds frumpy. But a buckle? Now that’s adorable. Add blueberries, and breakfast gets a whole lot cuter.
For me, the buckle–a traditional coffeecake with streusel topping–recalls days of childhood, of frilly socks and jumping rope to the tune of buckled shoes. And when I was wearing these buckled shoes, my lips were most likely stained with the remnants of some treat flavored “blue.” Maybe it was a cheap imitation of blueberry, or called simply “blue.” Either way, the flavor had nothing to do with the tiny berries that appear on bushes every summer. All grown-up, I know better. The taste of blueberries shouldn’t be imitated. It should be allowed to shine, just as is, humble and delicious and blue.
This blueberry buckle at Laura’s Sweet Spot is a better way to highlight the real “blue” flavor. Packed with little bursts of fruit, the breakfast cake is moist throughout and topped by buttery streusel crumbs. The comfort that comes with a slice of this cake in the morning is the still-warm satisfaction of home and childhood, shiny buckles and blueberries and all.
