Today’s plucky pup — Ollie, an adorable little Boston terrier — belongs to Kate Hartke, associate editor in the books team.
Kate’s family got Ollie, a rescue dog, in May 2009. She was, allegedly, “the cutest little puppy ever” and super-floppy. Ollie’s mommy dog died in puppybirth, and the whole litter was posted on petfinder.com. The ad was placed on a Tuesday, Kate saw it two days later, and applied.
Recounts Kate, “I was so happy to get her because my evil parents never let me have a dog. We were the last couple to pick out our puppy and chose between her and another female. The other dog was SO not into us — very bored and kept walking away. Ollie, on the other hand, curled up on Dan’s lap and fell asleep. We knew she was the right one.”

As for favorite toys, Ollie is obsessed with ball — a ball junkie, if you will. If she knows it’s around, she’ll start shaking until it’s out in the open and thrown around.
For food, Ollie’s a fan of anything that hits the floor, though Kate’s husband never ever drops anything down for her (whereas Kate will toss a chip or something down). Her favorite foods include peanut butter, apples, yogurt, and carrots.
She’s quite agile for a Boston terrier (most are not). Ollie jumps up and licks Kate’s face when she gets home, and she does crazy flips and leaps when playing ball in the yard.
In case you didn’t know, the America’s Test Kitchen offices (not the kitchen) are dog-friendly. Every once in a while, we’ll share a furry moment from our resident four-legged friends. Stay tuned for the cute.

Too cute!!! Ollie is so lucky to have such a loving and fun home! Our 2 labs, Hershey (also a resuce) and Dooley are equally spoiled and we have such fun with them and our cat, Gray (who just wandered in one day and never left)
I’ll put my dog, Dashiell, and his toy-destroying prowess up against Ollie’s any day. I guarantee you that (unfortunately) Dashiell will win.
We’ll gladly agree to meet Ollie for a match-up!
