You know the scene: It’s late, you’re peckish, and the fridge is only a short bunny-slippered trudge away. There’s something about the deepest hours of night that can make your appetite get a little more, ahem, creative than usual.
We asked around America’s Test Kitchen on their guilty-pleasure midnight snacking habits. The confessions poured forth, including:
Frozen Twix bars…
My boyfriend and I nosh on dumplings as a midnight snack over the weekends. (We have some the strangest conversations at 2am in the morning.)
Cheesy toast! Bread, cheese, toaster oven: Voila. Sometimes I fancy it up and put pickles on it, then fold it in half and eat it over the sink. I love stinky cheeses but ever since that episode with the raclette and three roommates with bedroom doors opening on the kitchen, I’ve been sticking with cheddar or gruyere.
Pasta with butter and cheese and pepper flakes, ’cause I’m Roman like that.

What are your guilty-pleasure late-night snacks?

P.S. If you’re feeling in a snacky mood, try munching on a Philly cheesesteak doctored with a dollop of sriracha, a schmear of mousseline on bites of whole-wheat toast, or a (cold?) slice of bacon and clam pizza.

Popcorn… I love great buttery popcorn
Spoon + Jar of Nutella = Midnight snack heaven.
Graham crackers & Fluff. This has been my all-time favorite snack since I was a wee one.
hot chocolate!
Chocolate for sure.
Those very spicy Korean instant noodles in a bowl!
Cheerios (no milk)!
HOMEMADE BREAD or YEAST ROLLS with Cinnamon/Sugar.
Toast. Buttered, with homemade jam. That’s all it takes for me.
cottage cheese with cinnamon (if available) or a mixture of cheerios, peanuts, and raisins.
Ice cream eaten by the spoonful straight from the carton!
Popcorn popped in olive oil and salt, and mixed in a big bowl with Utz potato chips. Crazy good!
Cream cheese smeared on a graham cracker!
Potato bread toast with lots of butter.
While nutella hits the spot any day, any time, my midnight cravings are usually for cereal. And sometimes cheese and olives. But usually cereal.
Baked Lays Potato Chips with Trader Joe’s Blue Cheese and Pecan Dip. Salty, cheesy goodness!
A bit late but my favorite midnight snack would have to be triscuits and homemade spinach dip.
Anything with a potato!
Pringles chips; God forgive me….
Snapea crisps (those dried pea pod things) dipped in tzatziki.
Definitely a bowl of sugary cereal – Frosted Flakes, Lucky Charms, Fruit Loops
Melted muenster cheese. On anything!
celery with peanut butter
Slices of apple with peanut butter…mmmmm, & a mug of hot chocolate!
Hot cup of tea & whatever baked good is calling out to me to be eaten.

Cereal with milk and peanut butter – preferably bran cereal, and crunchy peanut butter..
Cinnamon-sugar toast with tea OR a bowl of warm cereal – cream of wheat or warm grape nuts are both good.
Stacey’s baked pita chips…they are amazing….The more important question though, what is that amazing looking sandwich up top?
Refrigerated, fun-sized Snickers bars. Or, a bowl of microwaved popcorn and a handful of high-quality chocolate chips. Chocolate + texture = heaven!!
Whole grain toast with butter and honey! Usually with a cup of decaf Earl Grey! Perfect!
Scrambled Egg sandwich!
ripe pears, apples or tangerines dipped in melted chocolate (chips or bar). Very yummy.
Something chocolate with an ice cold glass of milk!! Yum!! I may have to have that now.
Favorite midnight snack? A smashed peppered olive loaf ham and cheddar cheese sandwich, on potato bread thats buttered on both sides and fried golden brown in a skillet pan, and a small cup of tomato bisque soup
My late night snacks usually involve nachos; something about the satisfying crunch of tortilla chips, combined with the melted cheese and smooth guac/sour cream makes it an irresistible late night snack!
Cheese. Always cheese. It’s easy to grab, just enough, and will melt before choking me if I fall back to sleep before I get it all swallowed.
Chocolate chips and dried mangoes!
Frozen biscotti dipped in tea……..
something salty like chex mix or popcorn.
Milk and cookies. In fact, I think I’ll have some now.
