COOKBOOK GIVEAWAY
Comment before noon EST, Tuesday Sept 6, for a chance to win a copy of The Best of America’s Test Kitchen 2011; one winner will be chosen at random.
It’s a simple question with a very personal answer: What do you like to eat at the movies?
Whether you’re at the local cineplex or tucking into a DVD at home, there’s usually a carefully chosen selection of snacks at hand. Here’s what some people at America’s Test Kitchen like to munch on:
My favorite movie snack at the theater is a combo of their bad popcorn with either Snowcaps, Raisinets or Mini Swedish Fish (preferably the red ones). And don’t be tempted to use the regular-sized Swedish Fish—those are much too big and they ruin the perfect balance of sweet and salt that the other candy provides.
Raisinets! But they have to be real Nestlé Raisinets. None of that “Sun-Maid Milk Chocolate Covered Raisins” crap. They’re a gross impostor.
Valentina hot sauce on the popcorn. It has to be Valentina brand; Buffalo brand is OK and Cholula only as a last resort.
And now for the Silly Question of the Day…
What do you like to eat when watching a movie?
Leave your silly answer in the comments!
P.S. Looking for movie-snacking inspiration on The Feed? Pop up a bowl of better-for-you popcorn, get sweet with DIY candied ginger, or simply pour yourself a better-tasting glass of wine.

I used to eat that whole box of Butterfingers. Now I may eat a few, but I could never eat a whole box like I did when I was in high school!
I always put my Coke in the freezer so there are ice crystals in the very cold beverage. I don’t like my Coke watered down by ice. I then bring an assortment of candy like Milk Duds, Peppermint Patties, Kit Kats or some other candy easy to eat in the dark. I must also have popcorn that’s fresh with butter preferably. I really love to have someone to share everything with right beside me!!
Of course popcorn and Coke (Now, Coke Zero) are always required, but I was a fanatic for ice cream bon bons. I make sure to pick up a box from Trader Joe’s whenever we plan a movie night here at the house.
I love eating gummies and chocolate covered pretzels at the movies!
Well, at the second-run theater pubs in my hometown: a housemade garden burger, or a slice and a local microbrew.
Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and Coke Zero. I’m going to go get some right now!!
Quality malted milk balls (not whoppers). I go back and forth over whether I prefer milk or dark chocolate—so most of the time I get a mix of both!
Junior mints at the movies! And this might sound really weird, but edamame at home!
Hot buttered popcorn and a cold soda.
I like mixing candies from the bulk bin, but never combine sours with sweets – I don’t like surprises in the dark!
Popcorn mixed with dark chocolate M&Ms is the only way to go. Which must be accompanied by a fountain cherry coke which always tastes the best at the movie theater!
I love jordan almonds at the movies and still scarf down popcorn like it’s the last bucket in the world.
By the way, check out Stephen King’s column years ago on Entertainment Weekly where he describes his snack routine at the movies (heavy bag = popcorn loaded with butter). I still think of him when I see a box of Junior MInts (he brings toothpicks to the movies and stabs about 6 mints on a stick – he calls them “mint kababs”).
I don’t even need to be at the movies to crave popcorn! it is my snack of choice and the only thing I crave when I get the munchies.
My husband and I usually get a popcorn and a box of chocolate covered peanuts to share at the movies. with a soda
lay’s oven baked sour cream and onion chips !!!!
Cheese & crackers with an ice cold beer
Popcorn sprinkled with cinnamon, cold beer with lime wedge!
When I’m dieting – diet caffeine free Dr. Pepper
When I’m not dieting – anything with chocolate, usually brownies
I prefer movies at home where I can stop and grab a glass of milk to go with the brownies still warm from the oven
I love dipping Fries in Ice Cream, so if at the movies that’s hard to come by, I’ll settle for chips dipped in ice cream!
Nestle Buncha Cruncha is fun to have while seeing a movie; sometimes movie theaters are the only places you can find it!
Also bring goodies…usually box of snow caps.
-a BIG tub of salted and buttered popcorn
-Nestle Bunch of Crunch is amazing (delicious and non-messy)
-a medium soda, MAYBE a large for a long movie like Inception….
buttered popcorn and junior mints or sour patch kids
As a kid? Goobers.
As an adult? Junior mints?
When I’m 90? Astronaut ice cream and meal pills.
I go to Somerville Theatre and get a giant cone of Green Monster ice cream (mint, oreo, fudge swirl).
Fresh hot buttered popcorn with just a hint of salt, plus a Dr. Pepper on the side. This is so NOT my type of food, but when at the movies … it’s a must. If I’m at home – homemade carmel corn.
If and when I indulge at the movies, it’s always junior mints dumped into a bag of popcorn. A perfect salty/sweet combination!
Coke, a real throat burning Coca-Cola with Movie Theater Popcorn with extra butter! The greasier, the better.
Popcorn with chocolate covered almonds mixed in. And a Dr. Pepper.
Peanut M&M’s and an ice cold regular Coke!
I love a giant plain popcorn and a giant diet coke to last the entire movie
Everlasting Gobstoppers!!!!
Popcorn made on the stove and sprinkled with Parmesan. If we go out to the movies, we skip buying treats at the theater. Way too spendy!
popcorn made with olive oil w/ parm, salt and pepper
I sneak in my snacks. I like home made kettle corn. I also like to make a mix of milk and white chocolate chips, roasted almonds and walnuts, raw sunflower seeds and dried cherries.
I love movie popcorn; specifically the butter! I purposely choose the theater that has a “self-serve” butter dispenser so I can put on as much as I like. Once I eat about half the box (or bag), there is no more butter, so I go out to the lobby and pour on some more!
I like having a glass of wine at home while watching a DVD or Netflix. If I’m at the theatre, I tend to stick with a bottle of water or a diet coke with a bit of cherry coke mixed in.
at home it’s popcorn popped in my whirley pop pot, using mojo de ajo (YUM!), melted butter and a light dusting of popcorn salt.
In theaters … I can’t eat theater popcorn, it angers me. So I usually just munch on a box of candy.
Buttered, salty popcorn and Dr. Pepper!
Breadsticks from the Italian restaurant next to the theater. Is that bad?
I really like nuts (cashews, pistachios, almonds or pecans) with either a nice cold glass of iced tea or milk.
I love Screaming Yellow Zonkers, a buttery candy glazed popcorn snack. but I can’t find them anywhere anymore! Im going to have to figure out a way to make them.
My kids like popping a bag of microwave popcorn and putting chocolate chips in it right after you take it out. Give it a shake and you have chocolate covered popcorn!
Pizza at home, popcorn in movies. Yummmmm!
Watching a movie at home, it has to be buttered popcorn with COLD coke! The coke must be fizzy still or it’s no good. Will sometimes pair the popcorn with Nutella = perfect salty + sweet. =]
At the theater, we enjoy milk duds. If we feel like splurging we get popcorn. At home, we usually save dessert for our movie treat: cookies, ice cream, peace crisp, etc. If we don’t have a sweet tooth, we make nachos!
Popcorn, arare (Japanese rice crackers), and peanut M&Ms!
I like horror movies so I stay away from things that make a mess when they spill, lol. Popcorn and a soda usually. Occasionally candy of some description.
POPCORN!!!! – whether at the movie theater or at home. It’s my favorite snack. Also, either Coke (cherry Coke if available) or a bottle of water which I smuggle in.
I LOVE the white popcorn that my husband pops in coconut oil and tops with a great spice blend that I make that includes curry, garlic salt, celery salt, cayenne, cumin, paprika, and brewers yeast.
My husband toasts Honey Nut Cheerios in butter in a cast-iron skillet, then sprinkles with popcorn salt. This sweet, salty, nutty snack is the main reason we stay home to watch movies.
Popcorn….popcorn….popcorn…..oh yeah and an ice cold Pepsi
Roasted almonds and ice cream!
Or a slurpee.
Popcorn is fine at the theater, but when I watch a movie at home, the routine is kinda weird. I want beef enchiladas with lots of cheese and both green and red sauce. Good beer is a must. After the enchiladas I eat rich dark chocolate, and yes, it is good with the right beer!
I enjoy those “Red Vines” licorice and a Coke more than anything when I go to the movies. If a friend happens to have popcorn, I may dip my hand into the bucket for a handful.
Buffalo Chicken Dip at home!!
Tropical Dots. I’m not normally a “gummy” candy lover, but I’ve gotten into the habit of swinging by Target before the movie and picking up a package. (shhhh… don’t tell the movie concession stand!)
well lets see if at the theatre we usually get popcorn but we stop off at the bulk barn before we go and grab many munchies like nuts, anything chocolate coated each person gets their choice, dried fruit for the healthy ones in our group. Then at the movies we all share it, we just keep passing the bag, we toss it all in one bag and take handfuls from thr bag. It is a surprise in every handful. Then at home, well we cook, we cook a big skoff to watch movies. Nachi dios, artichoke dips, any dips with cream cheese or melted cheese and we make pits chips, sometimes we cheat and buy these at the local bar. Then we habe steak, carmalized onions, or meatloaf, and usually homemade bread.
a nice pot of coffee and we sit and eat and watch the movie. the best part of the meal is by the time we are all full, the movie is over, we all head home ready for a great sleep. we try to rent comedies alot so we can laught a lot. food, friends, full tummies, laughter and a great movie what more could you ask for

My quintessential snack is: popcorn with lots of butter and salt. Or, maybe its lots of butter and salt with a little bit of popcorn? Yes, its unhealthy, so I do not indulge very often.
I love to have grahm crackers with natural peanut butter dipped in a nice cup of cold milk. Salty, sweet, creamy, awesome.
