I’ve seen this tip a number of places and one thing is never addressed – can you continue to use the filter cartridge afterward for water or is it best to keep it aside for vodka only?

I am wondering the same as lkm – can the filter be used again for water, or is it like the old coffee/spice grinder?

NOOOOOO unless you want vodka flavored water for a while! A friend of mine did this and her water tasted like vodka for weeks. And I know first hand…I tasted it >_<

Should a new filter be used and if so should it be soaked in water before using?

I have refillable tea bags and plenty of food-grade charcoal. Couldn’t I, in theory, do the same thing by lining a mesh filter with sealed tea full of charcoal?
