Easy to make and stripped of their weird ingredients, these homemade versions of Cheez-Its are sure to be a crunchy, cheesy hit.

What is a good substitute for the annatto seeds? Can I use turmeric as it seems it’s used here as a colouring agent more than for taste?
What are annatto seeds? Where do I buy them?
Annatto seeds can easily be bought at most grocery stores. Look in the Mexican aisle, where they sell spices in small bags. Achiote seeds are another name for Annatto, they are small and reddish black.
Ended up substituting the annatto seeds for ground turmeric as it’s impossible to find annatto seeds in Norway. It worked great and the crackers were really, really tasty!
Is there a way to make these gluten-free?
Should the butter be chilled and cut in, or room temperature and creamed?
Amy: I just put the butter in the mixer straight from the fridge and that worked just fine. However I did let the mixer go for maybe a minute instead of, as it says in the recipe, 30 seconds.
Hi Amy, good question. The butter is room temperature and creamed with the cheese.
Actually I’ve had great challenges finding annatto/achiote at my regular grocery store. I finally found some at Penzeys spice stores in Portland, OR, but I believe they are located all over. http://www.penzeys.com/
My grand kids love Cheez-its they will be the judge and jury on this recipe, ill let you know the verdict. Thanks
Just pulled these out of the oven. They taste amazing!
Can’t wait to try it.
Question? How many CRACKERS are there in a QUART! I will make these before the weekend and take them to church for the refreshments table. I have all the ingredients on hand, and will sub. TURMERIC for annatto because I try to get a lot of TURMERIC in my food (it’s good for the HEART.) I know people will want the recipe. I’ll come back next week and tell you how the crackers went with my friends; I can already say my husband and I will love them. We buy Chez-it often. Do you have a recipe for SALTINES?
Hi childsjerry, have a great get-together this weekend with friends! The amount of crackers will depend on the cutting of your dough, but you can always make multiple batches of the recipe. We don’t have saltines at the moment, but we have a recipe for crackers similar to Ritz crackers in our DIY cookbook.
