What binds this motley crew of gadgets together? They’re the color of the changing leaves, of course! America’s Test Kitchen is located right outside of Boston, so we get the pleasure of seeing lots of New England’s beautiful fall foliage. As a seasonal treat, let these orange, red, and yellow tools transport you to an autumnal state of mind. Read on to see what we discovered when we tested these gadgets in the kitchen.
1. Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler, available on Amazon
Don’t be fooled by its featherweight design and cheap price tag, because this is the best peeler we’ve ever come across. The Y-shaped tool easily tackled every task we put it to, thanks to a razor-sharp blade and a ridged guide which ensures little surface drag. It’s perfect for peeling all of the apples and root vegetables fall so kindly provides, and comes in an array of red, yellow, and green.
2. Metrokane Rabbit Wine Chilling Carafe, available on Amazon
If you need to keep your white wine cool, say, while you sit by a toasty fire, this gadget has got you covered. This glass carafe uses a stainless steel insert that holds ice, so it chills wine like an inside-out ice bucket. It kept our wine cool for 1 1/2 hours and required no special handling as we poured wine from the carafe. Even better? It was the only device of all the ones we tested that could chill a room-temperature bottle, getting it to 50 degrees in 15 minutes and keeping it there for 30 additional minutes.
3. Rose’s Perfect Pie Plate by Rose Levy Beranbaum, available on Amazon
Fall practically begs for pies, and there’s nothing nicer than a warm one served in an attractive pie plate. Rose Levy Beranbaum, author of The Pie and Pastry Bible, designed this scalloped-edged, red ceramic plate. It made perfect filling, but we did have some issues as it browned the edges a bit too quickly. Still, overall, we’re big fans and recommend it.
4. Kool-Tek 15-Inch Oven Mitt by Katchall, available on Amazon
After 18 rounds of testing, Kool-Tek still came out on top. Made with layers of Nomex and Kevlar for heat protection, these red mitts won fans for heat resistance and all-around dependability. What’s more, this mitt came out of the laundry cycle as good as new. It never let us down.
5. Zak! Designs Ice Cream Tubbie, available on Amazon
We know it’s not summer anymore, but ice cream is timeless (and seriously, what’s a slice of apple pie without it?). If you need to get a pint from point A to point B without its turning into soup, this Ice Cream Tubbie should do the trick. The brightly colored gadget neatly fits a 1-pint container of ice cream and kept ours frozen for 90-plus minutes. (It’s ideal for storing, transporting, and serving homemade ice cream, too.) One small design issue was that we found the lid could occasionally get stuck after long stints in the freezer, but running the container under warm water for 10 seconds easily solved the problem.
