Gadget name: J.K. Adams Plain Maple Rolling Dowel
Price: $16.00, available on Amazon
It looks like: A 2-inch-thick, light-colored, handle-free wooden dowel with blunt ends.
How it’s supposed to work: A good rolling pin should spread finicky, delicate pie dough easily and smoothly without sticking or tearing; roll out thick dough (like for gingerbread cookies) easily and evenly; and make quick work of rolling out stretchy pizza dough.
How we tested it: We set to work rolling out pie crust, yeasted rolls, cookies, and pizza.
How it actually works: This pin capably handled each variety of dough with gentle weight and a slightly textured surface that holds a dusting of flour for less sticking.
Good to know: Its long, straight shape made achieving even dough thickness and rolling out larger disks easy.
My favorite part: It’s old-fashioned, relying on no new technology, and never let us down.
Best for: Anytime you want to roll.
