Gadget name: Norpro 12-Inch Stainless Steel Skewers
Price: $6.00 for six, available at Amazon
It looks like: These guys look pretty much like…well, metal skewers: They’re thin, flat spears with looped ends for easy grabbing. Nothing fancy.
How it’s supposed to work: We’ve been burned by skewers before. Bamboo and wood scorches, super-thin double prongs are flimsy, and smooth, rounded prongs let food spin in place when you’re trying to flip it. (And don’t get us started on the inane design of the Fire Wire.) A good skewer should spear and flip food easily and efficiently.
How we tested it: We threaded the skewers with chicken-vegetable kebabs; scallops; and kofte, a kebab of ground meat and herbs.
How it actually works: The thin, flat, stainless-steel Norpros—the only skewer set we tested to ace every task—supported thick kebabs, threaded delicate scallops without tearing them, and turned food easily.
My favorite part: Their looped handles cooled quickly, so we could hold them to remove and serve food while our meal was still hot.
Overall: These skewers will be indispensable each and every grilling season.
