Which kitchen gizmos actually work and are worth buying

Paderno’s Three-Finger Oven Mitt

Does a goofy design make for better performance?

SIL_OvenMitt_Paderno-3fingered

We don’t mind looking a bit silly if it helps us in the kitchen (ahem, onion goggles). But with maneuverability so important in an oven mitt, would a three-finger design help or hurt? Unfortunately, the answer is hurt—literally.

Gadget name: Paderno World Cuisine Three-Finger Oven Mitts

Price: $71.10 for a pair

It looks like: A pair of leather gloves made for a Ninja Turtle.

How we tested it: We tested their maneuverability, heat resistance, and convenience by moving hot sheet trays loaded with baking cookies, holding a full casserole dish that had just been taken out of a hot oven, and running them through the laundry.

How it actually works: Not well. The mitts performed below average when it came to heat resistance, and began scorching when they came in contact with flames.

Drawbacks: Worse even than their poor heat protection was a complete lack of dexterity: The three-finger design was a hindrance.

Overall: The design doesn’t help you grab anything and the material can’t withstand heat—unacceptable for an oven mitt.

An even worse oven mitt was one I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond. It had the thumb in the center and you could not grab anything plus it was uncomfortable

You know, you could pick up a heavy duty welding glove that is more or less the same construction with leather on outside and lined with cotton from Lowe’s for $15.98. Seems like a better buy to me.
