If you’d like to make frothy milk for coffee drinks at home, this little milk frother by Aerolatte is a great device, for less than $20.
Gadget name: Aerolatte Milk Frother
Price: $19.99
It looks like: A lightweight, battery-operated wand.
How it’s supposed to work: Like a mini-immersion blender: You simply place the thin, stainless steel frother into warmed milk, and turn it on. It warms while it whisks, so thirty seconds later, you’re one step closer to the perfect latte.
How it actually works: Just like it says it will. We had frothy perfection in less than a minute.
Drawbacks: It’s battery-operated. Which means it’s portable—but it also might die in your time of need. (Best to keep extra batteries on hand.)
My favorite part: It’s a snap to use, clean, and store. (Can you tell we liked it?)
Best for: Making small quantities of whipped cream, vinaigrettes, and bases for many a delicious coffeeshop beverage.
What’s your favorite frothed milk drink?

I got pretty much the exact same tool from Ikea for $2.99 (It doesn’t have the Aerolatte brand on it). I use it at least 2-3 times a week when I make cappuccino using my Handpresso for the espresso. One tip to get extra foam that has some lasting power is to heat the milk first. I usually microwave the milk for 1-1.5 minutes. Perfect cappuccino every time. I either add a flavored syrup or use regular sugar and add a little of the hot water to make a fast simple syrup right in the mug.
I’ve seen those frothers at IKEA and wondered if they worked; they seem somewhat flimsier than the Aerolatte (I played with them at the store and at least one in the pile was already broken), but hey, at that price…
I make my morning coffee the same way–microwave milk in the cup, froth it, then add coffee. Awesome stuff. You just need a big enough mug–the frother easily doubles the milk’s volume.
I guess I will address Anthony and Lisa’s comments. I already owed the Aerolatte since somewhere around the year 2000 and it has held up well. My daughter bought the IKEA model and it lasted a month (not used every day). I like to calculate the cost of a purchase, even a gadget that seems pricey, against the amount of use and time I expect it to stay useful. This little gem has gone way beyond.
I guess with anything at Ikea “your mileage may vary.” I’ve had mine for a year now with no problems. Now when I go to use it in the morning watch it not work. -.-
Froth Au Lait works better than everything else I tried. Make sure to use Ultra-Pasteurized whole milk for the best results.
