Somewhat misleading title. This was about “finding a great all purpose slicing knife” rather than answering the question, “do you need a slicing knife?”

I think a more accurate situation for the title would be, “we sliced 180 lbs of meat with different knives, a slicer, a carving knife, a 8″ chefs knife, and a 10″ chefs knife, to determine if you need a slicer.”

I find myself disappointed with all of the video segments. I can’t be the only person in the internet land who would rather read something than watch a video. Maybe you could put a synopsis of the video or a transcript immediately beneath the YouTube display and above the “About the Author”?

Hi Joy, more details of the testing are available here: http://www.cooksillustrated.com/equipment/overview.asp?docid=17794

Personally, I’ve found the video segments quite helpful – the one on how to dry-age steaks was 60 seconds that has significantly changed the way I cook steak at home. This one wasn’t as practical, but I didn’t really expect it to be – it was more of a context-provider, which I enjoyed.

One suggestion I’d make is to always include the link to the written article when a video is related to it. This would make it a lot easier to find the full set of results.

Thank you, readers — we have put links to all the testings in all of the previous video-based posts on Gadgets & Gear, and will continue to do so going forward. We hope you find these useful!

This would be a lot more useful if the test results weren’t blocked.
