Which kitchen gizmos actually work and are worth buying

Banana Hanger

Some people take their tropical fruit seriously enough to make furniture for them.

Banana hangers—maybe you’ve seen them around. This one by Nature’s Way is about $6, and it’s a little white plastic stand holding a hook. You stick a bunch of bananas on the hook, so they hang like they’re on a little tree. It’s supposed to keep your bananas riper longer, with no bruises.

But guess what? We did a test side by side. We took a big bunch of bananas and put half on the hanger, and the other half in a bowl. They ripened exactly the same, with no difference at all between the two bunches.

So if you like the way it looks to hang your bananas up, OK, but it’s not affecting the quality of the fruit.

What do you think about banana-specific kitchen gear?

You didn’t observe any additional bruising from bananas that were stored in the bowl? I usually see some bruising when storing them on a flat surface.

I think we threw away our banana hanger anyway, though.

My kids now use our banana hanger as a toy. We made a ‘beehive’ home for their little toy bee to live in and a tire swing for the other little toys.

I love the banana hanger, as it frees up space and keeps the bananas looking neat. With 2 children under 4, we always have a bunch of bananas in the house.
